So it's no secret that I like to travel. I like to go on a trip at least once a year, and squeeze in any tiny ones that I can throughout the year as well. With this, I've learned that the best way to travel is carry-on.
Now I know this may seem impossible to some... Trust me I've gotten my fair share of questions as to how that is even possible! But trust me.. it is!! Along the way I have learned that it is very important not only what you pack, but the things you use or decide to take with you that allow you to travel with only carry-on.
So here is a list of 10 things I found useful for carry-on traveling....
#1 - Good Carry-On Luggage is Key
Without the right carry-on you might as well quit while you're ahead. You need something that can accommodate all the things you need for your trip. Of course this all depends on the length of your trip... For arguments sake we're planning for a week a more.
What carry-on bag have I fallen in love with?? My new Beis Carry-On Roller!!
I can say I am obsessed!!!
I recently just packed (in a afternoon mind you) for our upcoming trip to Tokyo, and this bag was a thing of beauty! The look, the feel, and just the way it is compartmentalized... it left me awe-struck. You can take a look at some more in depth photos and specs here. The price ($198) is well worth the luggage, and if you use Afterpay, that is avialable for Beis products as well. My favorite part? Every purchase supports the Girl Up Campaign. That itself is a beautiful thing.
#2 - TSA Approved 3-1-1 Set
So if you've never done travel with only carry-on, there is one thing you need to be highly aware of. The TSA 3-1-1 Rule. Basically it limits the amount of liquids you can take on a carry-on to 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or smaller to a 1 quart-sized resealable bag.
Now you would be surprised what is considered liquid under this rule. Of course your basic obvious liquid like shampoo and perfume are there... but mascara, foundation, and even lip gloss fall under this rule.
So while it is possible to grab a ton of travel sized products and stuff them into a 1 qt sized zip-lock (which I have done in the past). I have found a much more efficient way to pack all the toiletries you might need.
A TSA approved 3-1-1 set. I purchased this one on Amazon (I'll link it here)... and after packing up my toiletries I have to say this is the best thing I could have ever bought!
It makes it all so easy and organized. The set comes with a ton of different bottles and labels for any product you may need to pack. But the best part... these little tools which help you get product from your normal sized bottles and containers into the small ones they provide. Honestly it is a much cleaner and highly organized way of taking your toiletries with you.
#3 - A Useful (and Cute) Backpack
Aside from your clothes, shoes and toiletries there's a ton of other things you usually take on your trips; like your phone charger, headphones, and even maybe a book. But where would you store those things? The answer is a very useful and very cute backpack!
Again... Amazon is my best friend, and that is where I found this amazing backpack (here's the link). It's anti-theft and super spacious. The zipper is on the back, so it prevents anyone from opening it while your wearing it. Inside you have a ton of space to take some important valuables with you on your trip. Two hidden pockets on the outside also provide more storage space. Its available in a ton of colors, and come in a Medium or Large size. I opted for black and large.
#4 - A Jewelry Organizer
Now you may think this isn't really a necessary thing when traveling. But have you ever had a bag full of jewelry get tangled up in travel? It's a pain in the butt. This organizer solves that problem beautifully.
Another Amazon find (linked here), this inexpensive organizer is light but extremely capable. With compartments for all your jewelry... nothing will get tangled or lost. And its so lightweight and just the perfect size that it fits into my backpack just right.
#5 - Electronics Organizer
Ok hear me out... I know you think I've probably gone off the deep end with all these different types of organizers. But this is so useful! It keeps everything so neat (which is key when doing carry-on travels).
An AmazonBasics you know this product is good (find it here). With more than enough space for all your chargers, battery packs, and even memory cards. Its a sturdy little carrying case that keeps mess at bay.
#6 - Travel Wallet
When traveling in general, and even more so carry-on style you might have noticed that organization is crucial. So a travel wallet where you can store your passports, currency, and cards is essential.
I found this one in my favorite place in the world... TARGET (here's the link for you). For the price (which is a super reasonable $17) this wallet does it all! Holds plane tickets, passports, cards, currency. It has RFID blocking to ensure safety and a little handle for easy holding. I would recommend it for any overseas travel.
#7 - Tiny Tools
No... not hardware tools. But for example we ladies like to make sure we look good even on our travels. So our hair tools are usually a must for us. But what happens when we're packing only carry-on and space is limited???
We get tiny tools!! These travel hair tools are a god send and the perfect solution to keep the bad hair day away. I got these babies thanks to my Boxy Luxe subscription (which if you want to join use my code Lupearelis-FYFMZTAS at check out for a special gift). But you can find them on PYT. The mini ceramic styler is running for $75. While the mini turbo dryer runs for $85.
#8 - A Lightweight Jacket
Packing light is essential when packing carry-on. But you also want to be fashionable, and have clothes that will keep you warm just in case. So a lightweight jacket becomes your best friend.
This one I purchased from JustFab (linked here) is extremely light weight and perfect when you need something to layer on, but don't want to bulk up your carry-on bag.
#9 - Space Saving Shoes
The same goes for shoes when traveling with only carry-on. You need something comfortable, cute, and that saves space.
Enter my VANS!!! These shoes are perfect for traveling light. They are a great price (find them here online) and totally worth the price. They are comfy and only get comfier with use. They barely take up any space on your carry-on luggage so you can actually pack more than one pair for your trip!
#10 - Packing/Folding/Rolling Technique
And while this may not be a physical thing... this is probably the most important thing on the list. There's so many different ways to roll or fold your clothes for maximum potential.
Marie Kondo has her method... which is similar to how I do it. You can see a quick video about it below...
And here's a great video comparing folding, rolling, and packing cubes from BuzzFeed Bring Me that can help you see which one suits you best...
Either way you choose... this is crucial to save space and room on your carry-on luggage. Pack incorrectly and your loosing crucial space for maybe that extra outfit you might end up needing.
You'll see that it is totally possible to travel with just a carry-on. Trust me once you try it for the first time, you'll never want to check your bag again. No more waiting for you bags!!! YAY!!!
Is there anything I left out? Any other trip tips you want to see before I head out on my next voyage?? Let me know!
